A drum, belted in wood, hung from a wall.
When we drew TIVOLI No.02, we were looking at the small carved stone capitals of the Roman cloisters near Sant'Agata, where every drum was wrapped at the midpoint with a wood or metal collar. The detail was structural at first. It became decorative because the eye liked the contrast.
Our drum is a single block of raw Italian travertine. The walnut belt cinches it at the mid-line, the way the cloister capitals were bound, and acts as the shadow line where the upward and downward light split. From a black iron arm and a turned walnut backplate, the whole composition hangs an inch off the wall.
Compact at 6.7 inches across. Pairs beautifully across a vanity, a console, or the slim wall above a reading chair.
Real stone, real walnut, real brass joint
The drum is cut from a single block of travertine and left unfilled. The walnut belt is glued and pinned with a hidden brass dowel. The arm is bent matte black iron, attached to a turned walnut backplate with visible bronze rivets.
Every joint is honest. Nothing is hidden behind a cover plate that does not belong there.
