A small vault, hung in still air.
When we carved ARCA No.02, we kept returning to a single image: the open vaults of a Roman cloister, light pouring through a single arched opening onto a stone floor. ARCA holds that shape. A small travertine block, hollowed underneath into a U-shaped vault, the open mouth pointing down toward the table or counter below.
The form is compact (4.7 inches across). Hung alone, it reads as a single architectural gesture. Hung in a row of three, it makes a procession.
Above the stone, three stacked rings of solid walnut act as a hinge between the shade and the cord. They are not decoration. They are how the pendant joins to the world.
Carved, not cast
The travertine is sourced from a single Tivoli quarry. Each shade is cut and hollowed by hand. The figure of the stone is left raw, pin-holes unfilled. No two shades share the same surface.
The walnut rings are turned from solid European walnut and finished with a hand-rubbed oil. They darken slowly with time. Travertine lightens by sun-exposure. The contrast grows quietly over years.
