Why you'll love the TONDO No.01

  • Cream travertine floating over opal glass. A shallow disc of cream travertine, polished to a low sheen with open pores, floats above a small opal glass globe. Its veining shifts from piece to piece, so no two are alike.
  • No glare when you look up. The mouth-blown opal globe softens the bulb into an even halo with no hot spot. A turned walnut ball finishes the cord at the ceiling.
  • Sized for an island or a reading nook. The 9.8 in saucer, 5½ in tall, hangs on a 59 in adjustable cord over a kitchen island, a small dining table or a reading nook.
  • Fits a 4 in box, even on a slope. It hardwires to a standard 4 in U.S. junction box at 120V, takes ceilings sloped up to 30 degrees and dims with a standard wall dimmer. A free dimmable G9 bulb is included.

In the gardens of Villa d'Este above Tivoli, sun discs of warm stone have caught the light for four centuries. The TONDO No.01 borrows that gesture. A shallow saucer of cream travertine floats above a small opal diffuser, capped by a turned walnut sphere that meets the canopy like a wood bead on a thread. Read as one form, it sits between the post-war Italian pendants of Mangiarotti and the quiet wabi-sabi of a temple bell.

The travertine is hand-cut from a Tivoli quarry block, then face-polished to a low sheen that keeps the natural pores visible. Veining shifts from piece to piece, so no two saucers are identical. Underneath, a mouth-blown opal glass globe softens the G9 source into a halo, with no hot spot and no glare. The walnut canopy ball is turned from European walnut, oiled by hand, and grain-matched to read warm against the stone.

Sized for a kitchen island, a small dining table, or a reading nook. The saucer measures 9.8 in across (25 cm), with a fixed assembly height of about 5 in (12 cm) and an adjustable cord up to 59 in (150 cm). It runs on a single G9 socket, dimmable with a standard wall dimmer, with 120V wiring for standard U.S. circuits. The canopy seats flush on a standard 4 in junction box, and the unit handles ceiling slopes up to 30 degrees. A licensed electrician install takes about thirty minutes.

Hangs naturally with its sister, the TONDO No.02 ring pendant, when you want two of the same family reading across a long room. Pairs as well with the VERTIN No.05 mini travertine flush mount in an adjacent hallway, or the NIDO No.02 alabaster sconce on a stair wall. One pendant over the island, one ring in the dining alcove, and the travertine theme reads as a whole.
