A small stone, lit from inside.
CARSO No.01 is a single block of travertine, set onto a square canopy of solid wood. We were looking at the photographs of post-war Italian limestone quarries, where the same square blocks would stack against the side of a quiet hill. The form here is borrowed from that pile. Stone the size of a fist, sat on a piece of wood.
The travertine is real, cut in a quiet block of 4.7 by 3.5 inches. The interior is hollowed and lit by a single E26 bulb. Light filters through the natural pores in the stone, giving it the soft inner glow that travertine has had since Roman ceilings.
Mount it on the ceiling for a quiet flush. Mount it on the wall for a sconce that reads like a sculpture.
Real travertine, finished by hand
The block is hand-cut and hand-finished. The natural pores are sealed but not filled, so each piece keeps its true texture. No two stones repeat. The wood canopy is solid walnut or natural wood, oiled by hand.
The body is sized to fit a fist. We made it small on purpose. A grouping of three CARSO across a hallway reads stronger than a single oversize fixture.
