A sphere of opal, held in the air by almost nothing.
When we drew ARIA, we were thinking about the floating spheres that Achille Castiglioni and Vico Magistretti kept returning to in the 1970s: a glass globe balanced against a single bent line of metal. The bracket does not hold the sphere from below. It catches it from the side, the way a hand might rest against a soap bubble.
Our globe is hand-blown opal glass, 9.8 inches across. The bracket is bent steel finished in matte black, the joint cantilevered so that the glass appears to float forward of the metal. The whole composition stands 10.6 inches tall.
From the side, the lamp reads as a sketch. From the front, it disappears behind the glow.
Hand-blown opal, bent steel
Each globe is hand-blown in a small atelier. The opal finish is achieved by adding a fine layer of white glass to the inside of the sphere during the blowing. The result is a soft, even glow without hot spots.
The bracket is bent in a single pass and powder-coated matte black. It is heavy enough on its own to counterweight the globe. No additional ballast needed.
