Why you'll love the LUMA No.01

  • Opal glass over a see-through stem. A hand-blown opal dome glows evenly above a clear glass cylinder, where you can see the polished chrome core and the wiring inside. It all stands on a flat glass base.
  • Bauhaus geometry at desk scale. It stands 14¼ inches tall under a 7-inch dome, sized for a desk, a bedside table or a reading corner. A small brass pull chain switches it on.
  • Plugs in, dims, and ships with a bulb. It plugs into any standard outlet at 120V and works with a plug-in lamp dimmer. A free dimmable E26 bulb ships with it.
  • Tool-free bulb changes. You can replace the bulb in seconds without tools. At 4.2 pounds with a glass base, the lamp sits steady when you reach for the chain.

The 1924 lamp that taught modernism how to look.

When we made LUMA, we were not redesigning anything. The form was completed in 1924 by Wilhelm Wagenfeld and Carl Jucker at the Bauhaus in Weimar. Two glass elements, a chrome stem, a pull chain. It has been continuously in production somewhere in the world ever since, because the geometry was correct on the first attempt.

Our reproduction is faithful. A hand-blown opal dome of 7 inches across rests on a transparent glass cylinder. Inside the cylinder, a polished chrome steel stem holds the socket. A small ball-weighted brass pull chain hangs from the housing. The base is a flat round of glass.

You can see through the stem. You can see the wiring run. Nothing is hidden, because Wagenfeld's argument was that nothing needed to be.

Hand-blown opal, transparent stem, chrome core

The opal dome is hand-blown with a fine inner layer of white glass for an even glow. The transparent cylinder is pulled in one piece. The chrome stem is solid steel, plated and polished. The glass base is cut on a wheel and polished at the edge.

A free dimmable A19 LED bulb is included. Replaceable in seconds without tools.
